Dining in Donegal

If you have experienced the tempting cuisine at Redcastle Hotel & Spa in The Edge Restaurant and Captain’s Bar, then you may wish to explore further and sample more of Donegal’s culinary delights.

Donegal is the perfect foodie destination; boasting flagship restaurants such as Cedars at our sister property Lough Eske Castle and for a more laidback and casual environment The Railway Tavern, in Fahan, Donegal.

The Railway Tavern, also known as the Firebox Grill by locals, is a popular restaurant located on the shores of Lough Swilly, at Fahan, Co. Donegal, approximately 30 minutes from the Redcastle Hotel & Spa by car or taxi.

The Railway Tavern is housed in what was formerly the Station House of the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway Company (L&LSR) and is filled with railway memorabilia and character The “Swilly Line” as it was affectionately named, brought people on excursions from Derry to Fahan and on to Buncrana for bathing, golf, beach walks and for a day out. In the reverse direction, the catch of Buncrana’s fishing fleet joined the produce of Inishowen farmers on its way to the Derry markets.

At the centre of the restaurant, providing real theatre, is an open fire grill, housed in an old steam engine firebox, where diners can watch the chef at work. With regularly traditional music sessions and live events it is a very popular spot among locals – which is always a great sign!

The tavern’s cosy, traditional interior has retained much of its original charm and is perfect for an intimate dinner, quiet pint or a family meal. The popular menu is updated throughout the year, adding new dishes and options alongside popular classics. For early diners there is an amazing ‘Early Bird’ special offer.

Redcastle Hotel & Spa reception will be happy to make a reservation for guests staying at the hotel, or guests can contact The Railway Tavern directly.

Cedars Restaurant is a worthy setting for a romantic dinner for two, or a special lunch and is a perfect blend of style and elegance. The menu changes with the seasons and uses fresh local ingredients, harvested from the land, shore and sea of this stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way.  The skilled culinary team work to create dishes of the finest quality and exquisite taste, which can be paired with wines from the hotel’s cellar.

Lough Eske Castle hotel is also home to the famed Father Browne Bar: Father Browne is generally considered to be Ireland's most important photographer of the twentieth century. Often known as 'Father Browne of the Titanic', it was his obedience to his Provincial's order to "get off that ship" that prevented Father Browne from travelling on the final part of the voyage and possibly saved him from a watery grave. Disembarking at Cobh ensured international fame when, following the tragedy of the sinking of the Titanic, his photographs were published on front pages all around the world.

Over 200 of the greatest images taken by the extraordinary Father 'Titanic' Browne have been remastered and are displayed in the Father Browne Bar where visitors can enjoy a drink and surrounded by these historically important images.
