The Railway Tavern, also known as the Firebox Grill by locals, is a popular restaurant located on the shores of Lough Swilly, at Fahan, Co. Donegal. The Railway tavern is housed in what was formerly the Station House component of the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway Company (L&LSR). The Railway Tavern is completely filled with character alongside the resounding echoes of so many past visitors. Serving up a slice of history; one plate at a time!
The “Swilly Line” as it was affectionately named, brought people on excursions from Derry to Fahan and on to Buncrana for bathing, golf, beach walks and for a day out. In the reverse direction, the catch of Buncrana’s fishing fleet joined the produce of Inishowen farmers on its way to the Derry markets.
The tavern’s cosy, traditional interior has retained much of its original charm and is perfect for intimate gatherings, a quiet pint or a meal for all the family, young and old. They have a very popular Menu that has been updated with over 20 new dishes and options for all tastes. They also have an amazing Early Bird offer that you certainly should not miss out.
At the centre of the Railway Tavern’s restaurant is the open grill fire where patrons get to watch the chef cook their steak or burger, adding to the anticipation of the meal. They also regularly host traditional music sessions alongside fantastic live music events and it is a very popular spot among locals – which is always a great sign!
